The Healing

I spread five fingers and five seasons came;
I kept the one that had no name.

I closed them 'round the stepchild month;
She felt like love when love is done.

I stuffed the lost one in my mouth,
And spoke things scratching to get out.

The Gypsy wrapped around my eyes,
And by blue evening I was blind.

She wormed her way into my ear,
And whispered quite like you, my dear.

She burrowed deep into my brain,
Sweet and sharp like blade and cane.

But when the sweet bitch found my heart,
She bit and sealed the broken part.

  1. Hard to find anything adequate to say to this one, it's so complete in itself. From the first couplet to the last, each word carves its message; the heart is just a wall for its graffiti. One of your best and most cutting, Shay.

  2. This one sings to me, like a dark Mother Goose Rhyme might.

  3. This gypsy is a sly and certain one, isn't she. One day someone will call her out under moonlight and do battle for the lost souls she keeps hidden in her petticoats. I'd like to be an owl in a nearby tree when that goes down.

  4. The rhyme and content derived from what is between that finger in your ear and the synapses truly rings of your talent.

    Like this one alot and always enjoy what hedgewitch and Kerry and lola and Kathy and etc, etc, etc say...

  5. One of your best, kiddo, and I do not know how you do it, but please never stop. I need to read you every day. It reminds me of What Is Possible, even though it is so far beyond my reach, I just have to admire the trajectory:) It is a brilliant thing to behold.

    You should be famous. Truly. Send a book of your poems somewhere.

  14. If Jack White were a girl and a little less scared of his shadow, he would write songs like this. I dig the swampy/ gypsy feel. Your sense of mystical always brightens my day, as you use it so smartly!
