Other Loves

I don't need much--
just flame beneath the kettle,
and in letters carefully kept.

In my hands, a book--
and a good dog curled behind my knees.

Is it enough?
It will have to be.

Other loves may fail us.
If so,
we have soft familiar blankets,
and sleep.
________

  2. Sometimes I think all our homes need to be on wheels, except when they fall off. This is totally a poem which opens the door and invites the reader in to hear the words of each object in the room, speaking for the one who has no words left.

  3. Someday, I want to rent a home-on-wheels and just drive, without predefined destinations or meal reservations... just driving and living..... Love the feel of your poem :)

  4. You know, it sounds good enough for me - book, dog, blanket: I need no other comforts.

  8. Love the concept of a house on wheels ... means I can take it anyplace I want to be!
Also love your idea of what simplicity is all about.

  9. Very like my house, compact as an insurance policy with flame and words too when I wish. An oddly simple safety with hermit-like sadness and song.

  10. A wise piece, and no, that's not some sexist way of referring to you. I don't make many friends when I say things like "I'd rather read a book than talk to 95% of the population." As for dogs, they're love beyond words. Thanks Shayng-a-Lang-Lang

  21. Must be the time of year, but we all sort of drifted to "cottage" mentality for these MZ poems. Or perhaps you posted first and we all followed suit.

I really like what you got going on here. I am so glad to know I am not the only girl who considers her nest of blankets a great lover...

also I smiled a bit with all I need is a book and a good dog: that was so Shay, constantly reading and too picky about what, but VERY specific in her requirements for dog (if you can call good specific). Well done lady and viva la
